Kai was born in Australia. From a large musical family that performed for family friends. At age 9, they won a competition for solo voice. Kai started out on ukulele and later picked up guitar. In their teens, Kai took lessons on bass guitar, organ and piano. They developed musical skills playing at church. In college, they started playing original songs at open mics. They also performed with various bands playing top-40, original rock, and standards. One band developed a strong regional following and released an independent CD. Recently, they have been performing at various open mics in New Jersey and Philadelphia. Kai's music is influenced by classic song-writers, featuring strong melody, harmony and lyrics. Kai's images and performances explore gender-queer expression.
